Troop Seating: Armored Carrier Upgrade

ADVANCE SEATING SOLUTION

OVERVIEW

The Advanced Troop Seat is a cutting-edge seating solution designed specifically for Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) to ensure enhanced comfort, safety, and efficiency for military personnel during transit. This innovative seat combines expertise in mechanical design, sheet metal fabrication, and precision manufacturing to deliver a superior seating system tailored to meet the rigorous demands of military operations.

DESIGN LAYOUT

The development of a troop seat involved an extensive process encompassing anthropomorphic studies, ergonomic analysis, prototyping, rigorous testing, and manufacturing. The objective was to create a robust, ergonomic troop seat suitable for Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) while adhering to General Safety Regulations requirements.

METHODOLOGY

Anthropometric and Ergonomic Analysis: Initial stages involved studying anthropomorphic data across various percentiles to derive the ideal dimensions for seat parts. Additionally, extensive research into ergonomic principles helped determine optimal seating positions for user comfort.

Prototype Development and R&D: Using SolidWorks, a basic prototype was crafted and manufactured. Subsequent phases involved iterative R&D, including multiple model iterations and stress/fatigue analyses using ANSYS. These processes led to the finalization of the troop seat's frame design.

Incorporation of Additional Features: Responding to GSR requirements, the design integrated a removable headrest with a robust locking system and a spring-operated, pin-locking seat folding mechanism, meeting management approval.

Field Testing and Validation: A final prototype underwent rigorous field testing, enduring a 50-kilometer cross-country trial with a 100 kg occupant secured by a 5-point seat belt. The successful passage of this test led to the green light for manufacturing.

MANUFACURING AND DEPLOYMENT

Pre-Manufacturing Preparation: Prepared cutting data for laser cutting and bend drawings for bended plates, streamlining the manufacturing process.

Production Oversight: Generated detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings, accompanied by an instruction manual. Overseeing the production of 40 troop seats ensured adherence to design specifications.

Surface Treatment and Upholstery Coordination: The troop seats underwent surface treatment for enhanced durability. Concurrently, coordination with the upholstery department finalized headrest, backrest, lower backrest, and seat upholstery.
PERSPECTIVES
OUTCOME

The successful completion of this process facilitated the installation of 48 optimized troop seats into 4 operational APCs currently deployed in field operations. The seats not only comply with GSR document requirements but also offer enhanced comfort and functionality.

CONCLUSION

This project showcases a holistic approach to troop seat development, incorporating research, design, rigorous testing, and meticulous manufacturing. The seats represent a culmination of efforts, meeting both operational needs and ergonomic standards.
